Idaho Public Two-Year Colleges
Junior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and Schools
The State of Idaho administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Idaho, sometimes called Idaho junior colleges, or Idaho technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Idaho colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Idaho. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the
Idaho local community
In 1939, the Idaho State Legislature passed the Junior College Act, which permitted the establishment of public junior colleges. Coeur d'Alene Junior college, initially founded as a private school in 1933, became North Idaho Junior College. The College of Southern Idaho was established in
Twin Falls in 1964.
In addition to the two public community colleges in the state, there are six postsecondary vocation-technical schools. Two are units within each community college, three are within a four-year college/university, and one is a two-year stand-alone technical college.
