Hawaii Public Two-Year Colleges
Junior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and Schools
The State of Hawaii administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Hawaii, sometimes called Hawaii junior colleges, or Hawaii technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Hawaii colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Hawaii. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the
Hawaii local community
The Hawaii Community College Act of 1964 provided for the development and administration of a community college system that would expand access to higher education opportunities across the state. Four state technical schools were later transferred from the Department of Education to the
University of Hawaii to become part of the community college system. Today, seven community colleges operate under the jurisdiction of the University of Hawaii system.
