Georgia Community Colleges (2-Yr Colleges)Georgia Junior Colleges, Technical Schools, and InstitutesThe State of Georgia administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Georgia, sometimes called Georgia junior colleges, or Georgia technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Georgia colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Georgia. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Georgia local community The first Georgia junior college was founded in 1884 as a private college. The Georgia General Assembly established the Board of Regents System of Georgia in 1931 which included all state junior colleges. DeKalb College established in 1964, did not join the university system until 1986. Today, most of the 15 two-year colleges have deleted "junior" from their names.
