Florida Junior Colleges, Technical Schools, and Institutes
The State of Florida administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Florida, sometimes called Florida junior colleges, or Florida technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" California colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Florida. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Florida local community
Florida junior colleges date back to 1933 when Palm Beach Junior College was established as a public two-year college. The legislature established the Community College Council in 1955, and the resulting master plan recommended a system of public community colleges within commuting distance of 99% of Florida's population. By 1972, 28 community colleges had been established. In 1979, the legislature established the State Community College Coordinating Board, which was replaced in 1983 by the State Board of Community Colleges.
The Florida Association of Community Colleges is the professional Association for Florida's 28 public community colleges, their Boards, employees, retirees, and associates. The mission of the Association is to actively promote, democratically represent, support, and serve the individual members and institutions in their endeavors to provide their students and the citizens of Florida with the best possible comprehensive community college educational system.
