Connecticut Public Two-Year Colleges
Junior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and Schools
The State of Connecticut administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Connecticut, sometimes called Connecticut junior colleges, or Connecticut technical institutes, and so-called "four-year"
Connecticut colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Connecticut. The name, "community colleges" derives from
the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Connecticut local community
In response to the recommendations of a special Study Commission on Higher Education, the Connecticut General Assembly established the first system of community colleges in 1965, advocating broader access to higher education available for all citizens of Connecticut, resulting in 12 community colleges
by 1972.
Connecticut manufacturers' need for competent technicians following WWII, give rise to the first technical college in 1946, followed by other technical institutes. In 1965, five state technical institutes remained as state technical colleges and were included in the state's two-year higher education
system, although separate boards were maintained for the community and technical colleges. The five technical colleges in 1989 were merged with existing community colleges, and the boards were consolidated and renamed the Board of Trustees of Connecticut Community-Technical Colleges.
