Colorado Public Two-Year CollegesJunior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and SchoolsThe State of Colorado administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Colorado, sometimes called Colorado junior colleges, or Colorado technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Colorado colleges which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Colorado. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year" colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Colorado local community
Various individual colleges have existed for years in the state, the Colorado Community College and Occupational Education System (CCCOES) was created in 1967 by the Colorado General Assembly. The CCCOES responsibility included developing and establishing state policy for occupational education, governing the state system of 11 community colleges and coordinating four local district colleges. Two of the four local district colleges have joined the state system in recent years.
