Arizona Public Two-Year Colleges
Junior Colleges, Technical Institutes, and Schools
The State of Arizona administers its own system of higher education which operate at least two tiers of public colleges. One being the community colleges in Arizona, sometimes called Arizona junior colleges, or Arizona technical institutes, and so-called "four-year" Arizona colleges
which award bachelor's and master's degrees. The "two-year" community educational institutions provide post-secondary education and lower-level tertiary education, granting certificates, diplomas, and associate's degrees in Arizona. The name, "community colleges" derives from the fact that "two-year"
colleges primarily accept, and attract, students from the Arizona local community
Arizona has a long history with two-year postsecondary education beginning in the late 1880s with the establishment of Eastern Arizona College, which began as a private, church-related institution. Phoenix College was established in 1920 as part of the Phoenix Union High School District. Arizona
community college system was created in 1960. Arizona, today, supports 19 comprehensive public, one independent and one tribal two-year college.
