If you are considering training for a fascinating new career, why not consider the benefits of studying for a paralegal degree and becoming a legal secretary? The Bureau of Labor states that employers are increasingly looking for graduates of paralegal degree programs rather than training people ‘on the job'. While it is not a requirement to complete a paralegal degree program approved by the American Bar Association (ABA), many employers see it as an advantage.
The role itself has changed over the years meaning that your responsibilities would be more than merely administrative in nature. As a paralegal, you may be required to help lawyers prepare for closings, carry out research, prepare draft reports and contracts, or create written reports that a lawyer can refer to in court.
Paralegal degree programs vary a little between colleges, however you may typically study some of the following subjects: basic law practice; legal research legal writing and analysis, criminal law, ethics; real estate law; civil litigation, personal injury; corporate law; family law; and wills, trusts, probate and estates. You may find it extremely helpful to be methodical in your approach, with close attention to detail. Your standards of written English should be fairly high. While you do not need to be a computer expert, you may find a familiarity with basic software useful, such as databases and word processing packages.
The Bureau of Labor predicts that career opportunities for paralegals will grow faster than average between 2002 and 2012. The main reason for this is the tendency for law firms to delegate some duties, previously only performed by attorneys, to paralegals in order to reduce costs.
