Explore Culinary Arts Career paths.... Many young people worked as cooks and food preparation workers—almost 19 percent were between 16 and 19 years old.

A culinary arts education is essential to become a successful hospitality professional. You will learn the core disciplines in commercial food preparation through hands-on training, restaurant management, nutrition, sanitation, and appreciate culture and gastronomy.

A certificate program provides hands-on training. Four-year and associate-degree programs have tracks in all aspects of hospitality management. Choose a school which emphasizes hands-on, in-kitchen training. In addition, the school should have a faculty of experienced and accomplished chefs. The Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts Program integrates classical French techniques and modern American kitchen management skills. Lastly, select a location that provides the best externship opportunities.

Once, cooking was once seen as either a hobby or a chore. Now it is rightly regarded as a highly skilled profession within a multi-billion dollar industry. The restaurant industry is now the biggest employer in the US besides the government. 11.7 million employees – 9% of all people employed in the US – work in the restaurant industry. By 2012 it is estimated that the number of employees will rise to 13.3 million. There is clearly a bright future for anyone training in culinary arts and science today.

A culinary degree is the basis of a career that could take you in several directions depending on your preferences and skills. An increasing number of jobs are available in hotels, restaurants and resorts across the US. The US department of labor reports that the upward trend in the industry is likely to continue until at least the end of the decade.

The range of culinary roles is reflected in the range of culinary programs available. You can chose a general cooking program or specialize in pastry, baking, or one of the many other culinary arts. Not only will you take a lot of courses in the kitchen itself (baking, grilling, sautéing, learning to cook with a wide range of meats, fish and poultry), but your coursework will also include more business-oriented classes such as accounting human resource management, accounting, hospitality law, yield management, food safety and others. Courses in marketing, customer service, communication and leadership will help you learn how to make a business profitable, attract customers, and recruit a successful team.

Working in the culinary field is a challenging, exciting career path with good financial rewards and a continual learning and development curve. There are few other careers in which you can continue to improve your skill throughout your career without the necessity of additional education. There are many dimensions to cooking – many different styles and cultures of food preparation. Career Overview
From dawn to dusk every minute of each day, thousands of Americans enjoy meals prepared by professional caterers. The skills of those who have invested their talents in the culinary arts are much in demand and valued by people everywhere who appreciate a good meal away from home.

Due to the nature of the catering business, most restaurants and catering establishments work on a shift rote system covering most hours of the day and, as part of a team, you will be expected to prepare food ingredients, cook and serve meals achieving standards demanded by your catering establishment. Hours are often long and are invariably worked in a hot and hectic environment; however, people who choose the culinary profession thrive on the creative, exciting atmosphere of a well-disciplined, busy kitchen.

Coursework and Prospects
Most distance education courses will instruct you in all aspects of your specialization including menu planning, food hygiene and storage and preparation of ingredients. Other training you will receive may include the following: ordering of food and other supplies, staff management, use of kitchen tools and machinery, equipment cleaning and monitoring and the design of recipes. You will find your culinary education appreciated in many settings from school dinner halls to the most high prestige restaurants in the land and you can be assured that your online training is as recognized in the business as more conventional routes of education.

After Earning Your Degree
After earning your degree, there is really no limit to where or how far you can go. As a professional chef, you are both an artist and a business professional. If you manage to combine these two seemingly disparate disciplines into one successful career, the sky is the limit. Furthermore, don't feel that you are restricted to the Illinois area. Many graduates go on to fill top chef positions around the world. Rome, Paris, New York, Tokyo, and Shanghai are but a small sample of what awaits you after completing your training and certification.
