Quebec Career Colleges and Trade Schools

Career Colleges and Technical Schools in Quebec

A Francophone educational paradise north of the border

Quebec is the only Canadian province where the official language--at the provincial level--is French. According to the Quebec Ministry of Education, the official language of instruction is French, which is the first language of more than 80 percent of the population of Quebec.

McGill University, Concordia University and Bishop's University are the three universities in Quebec that provide instruction in the English language. If you've always wanted to study in a French-speaking place but don't want to move all the way to France, Quebec colleges and universities might be right up your alley.

Colleges and universities in Quebec: varied and plentiful

The Université de Montréal is the second-largest Francophile university in the province, and it's known for its medical and law schools, while the École Polytechnique de Montréal (Montreal Polytechnic) is a leading research institute in the sciences and engineering. The Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) has a current enrollment of 1,000 foreign students who hail from more than 60 countries. The university is home to the first public and university-based chiropractic program in North America.

Overview of the educational system in Quebec

In Quebec, schooling is mandatory until age 16. It is the only province in Canada that requires 11 years of study to complete a high school diploma rather than the traditional 12 years. Thus, completion of the two-year college program does not give students the equivalent of a university diploma. Those students must still must complete a minimum of three years of university education in order to obtain a bachelor's degree.

Following graduation from secondary school, most students continue to a general and professional education college (known by their French acronym, CEGEP). They can specialize in a number of different vocational or pre-university fields. The term of study is two years for pre-university and three years for most vocational diplomas.

According to the Quebec Ministry of Education, diplomas of vocational study (DVS) at the secondary level are available in a wide variety of fields, including interior decorating and visual display, automated systems electromechanics, dental assistance, industrial drafting, desktop publishing, and many more. At the college level, there are hundreds of programs that award DCS (Diploma of Collegial Studies) and ASC (Attestation of Collegial Studies ) programs.

Student life at a Quebec career college or trade school

Montreal is the province's largest city, while the capital, Quebec City, is the only fortified city in North America. This diverse and vibrant city of 3.6 million is the second-largest Francophone city in the world (after Paris). Quebec offers 22 distinct regions, each with their own flair and distinctive offerings. Try surfing on the St. Lawrence river in Montreal or enjoy it aboard a kayak as one of the world's largest rivers crosses Quebec.

Temperatures plummet in the winter, so don't forget your trusty down parka and take advantage of the outdoor adventures, including world-class skiing. If you prefer warmer temperatures, stay indoors and enjoy museums, arts and culture throughout the region. Central Quebec has a subarctic climate and you can expect heavy winter snowfall in all corners of Quebec.

Brush up on your French and don't forget your toe warmers. You might come back from studying at one of the Quebec colleges or universities with both a degree and highly marketable foreign-language skills. Bonne chance!
