Quebec: bilingual schools, top universities and job opportunities

Quebec province boasts a combination of stunning natural scenery, rich history and culture, as well as two of Canada's most vibrant cities, Quebec City and Montreal.

Career colleges and universities

The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada is a good source of information about many Canadian colleges. Some of the top schools in the province include the following three:

  1. McGill University, called "Canada's Harvard," has a student body that's about 20 percent international.
  2. Quebec Tourism and Hotel Institute trains and researches hotel, tourism and food service industries.
  3. Rosemount Technology Center teaches computer graphics, cabinetmaking and many other specialties.

Other career and technical schools abound in major cities and smaller towns.

To study in Canada you need a study permit or temporary resident visa. Typical tuition ranges from $13,000 to $16,000 for international students. Canadian dollars are worth roughly the same as U.S. dollars. Choose from English, French and bilingual schools.

After graduation

Quebec offers international students a fast-track to citizenship, provided they are approved by the federal government and can speak French. Many Quebec schools offer remedial French classes specifically for international students.

Demand for many occupations should increase rapidly, including jobs in manufacturing, service occupations and health care. Many of these fields require only a post-secondary certificate, not a college degree.

Top industries in Quebec include forestry and its related businesses, mining, and energy. The median annual family income in Quebec was $75,000 in 2009, above the median for Canada.

Media is a wonderful field that offers interesting opportunities for congenial people who love the spotlight, and also for quiet souls who enjoy toiling behind the scenes to make the magic happen. Whether it's radio, television, or media of the future, success in media has much to do with your ability to work well with a team.

Media personalities need to be articulate and outgoing, with the ability to think on your feet and remain poised in unexpected situations. Classes in acting and speech as well as journalism and English composition form an excellent foundation.

Those who prefer to work as technical crew need a passion for quality and detail, powerful team spirit, and good mechanical aptitude. Opportunities include becoming a cameraperson, a lighting technician, a broadcast technician, or sound engineer.
