Puerto Rico Career Colleges and Trade Schools

Career Colleges and Technical Schools in Puerto Rico

Attending vocational or trade school in Puerto Rico

Can you name a Caribbean island where you don't need to exchange your dollars and for which you don't need a passport? You guessed it: Puerto Rico.

Just like a few other islands around the world, this gorgeous island is a U.S. territory. To get there, it's a quick flight from New York City and an even quicker flight from Florida or Texas. If you are looking for a solid American education, whether it be at colleges, universities, technical schools, vocational schools and trade schools, and want excellent weather to boot, then you've come to the right place. Spanish is the official language, and thus the official language of instruction at colleges and universities in Puerto Rico.

A snapshot of the Puerto Rican educational system

No need to learn anything new here--the Puerto Rican educational system is identical to the one you are used to from your hometown. The only difference: instruction in the island's public schools is conducted entirely in Spanish, and English is taught as a second language (taking it is compulsory). However, private schools tend to teach in both English and Spanish.

Schooling is mandatory between the ages of 5 and 18. Students have the choice to attend traditional high schools or can learn a trade at a vocational or technical school. Popular trades, which can be learned at Puerto Rico trade schools, include auto mechanic, cosmetologist, carpenter, air conditioning specialist, etc.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, auto mechanics earned a mean annual wage of $20,400 in 2009, while cosmetologists earned $20,520 and carpenters earned $18,720.

In terms of post-secondary education, Puerto Rico has more than 50 institutions of higher learning. Many American professionals head to medical or law school in Puerto Rico, as the competition for admission is a bit less fierce than in the continental U.S.

Graduates of Puerto Rico colleges and universities can practice law or medicine anywhere within the U.S. or Puerto Rico. In 2009, physicians in Puerto Rico earned a mean annual age of $124,390, according to the BLS. Lawyers earned a mean annual wage of $66,820.

Going to vocational or trade school in Puerto Rico

Beyond the irresistible appeal of more than 270 miles of pristine beaches and crystalline waters, there's even more to Puerto Rico. Discover El Yunque, the only tropical rain forest that's part of the U.S. National Forest Service, or explore one of the fantastic 19th-century coffee plantations such as Hacienda Buena Vista in Ponce.

The island has six distinct regions and includes two smaller islands, Vieques and Culebra. The capital, San Juan, is the oldest city in the U.S. and dates back to 1512. It's home to almost two million people. If smaller towns and villages are your thing, you will be sure to find them in more remote areas, such as the area of Porta del Sol (if you can call a three-hour car ride from the capital remote).

You won't need to pack your winter clothes if you are headed for a Puerto Rico technical school, but do pack your sunglasses! Puerto Rico is a fantastic place to study away from home without heading to a foreign country.
