Puerto Rico Education Degrees & Training

Curriculum, Secondary, and Primary Education Degrees in Puerto Rico

What you need to know about studying and living in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rican educational system prioritizes the learning of both Spanish and English languages. English is a subject in the first two grades, then gradually increases in frequency, so that by middle school, two-thirds of instruction is done in English. In most high schools, all instruction is conducted in English. A U.S. territory or commonwealth, the population is roughly four million. Approximately 76 percent of its residents are white and of Spanish origin. African-Americans are the largest minority at 6.9 percent.

Schools in Puerto Rico

The literacy rate is greater than 90 percent. Forty percent of the territory's budget goes to schools, demonstrating the heavy emphasis on learning. There are more than 50 schools of higher education on the island. These are four of the largest ones:

  1. University of Puerto Rico
  2. Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico
  3. Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico
  4. Universidad del Este

The island has one of the highest percentages of college-educated populations in the world. It costs about as much to attend college in Puerto Rico as it does in the U.S. In 2006, for example, a bachelor's degree from a public university cost about $9,529, while in the continental United States that same program cost $10,435.

Employment in Puerto Rico

Though statistics show extremely favorable economic conditions, poverty continues to pervade the island: Half of the island's population currently receives food stamps. On the other hand, industry continues to outpace agriculture as a primary source of employment. These are six key industries:

  1. pharmaceuticals
  2. electronics
  3. clothing and textiles
  4. processed foods
  5. petrochemicals
  6. tourism

Construction also continues to grow at a very rapid 15 percent. Dairy, livestock and sugar are the island's main agricultural products. The average hourly rate is $8.08/hour, well below the national average, and unemployment was at 16 percent in August 2011.

What Are Career Prospects Like For People With An Education Degree?
In a word: excellent. The Bureau of Labor calculates that education is the largest industry sector in employment terms. It is also predicted to grow by 26.4% between 2002 and 2012 according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook (a Bureau of Labor publication). This is due, in part, to the shortage of teachers and also the fact that many are reaching retirement age or leaving the profession for other reasons. This combined with the baby boom means that opportunities in education are widespread. You may find that training requirements vary widely when seeking employment at different educational establishments. You might need to be accredited in your State, so make sure you check with your college.

What Will I Learn During My Education Degree Training Courses?
Your Education degree courses may include educational theory, curriculum design, student development and presentation skills. If you are interested in teaching a particular subject you will generally be required to have previous industry experience and/or a degree in that subject already. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential as are reasonable levels of math and an ability to explain concepts in a number of different ways. You might find the virtues of patience and good time management pretty useful too!
