Merchandising Training in New York
If you like to keep up-to-date with the latest trends in design, materials, textures and colors, and have an interest in the production process and how this relates to market demand, a career in fashion merchandising could be for you.
As a fashion merchandiser, your role is to ensure that new fashion designs meet current customer demands. Your prime concern is to provide customers with the clothing and accessories that they want to buy, when and where they want them and at a price they are willing to pay. The job involves all the activities necessary for understanding and analyzing consumer demand, for developing and selecting appropriate products and for promoting and selling the goods for a profit.
Fashion merchandising does not apply just to clothing, but includes all the accessories, cosmetics and fragrances used by women, men and children. As a result, employment opportunities are varied and merchandisers can be found working for both manufacturers and retailers, textile mills, advertising agencies, design studios and fashion forecasting firms; sometimes they specialize as production managers, quality controllers or fashion retailers.
In order to succeed in fashion merchandising, you must have the right training and education. A degree program with a major in fashion merchandising, or a course at a college specializing in fashion studies should teach you what you need to know. Courses in subjects such as defining and analyzing target markets, planning and promoting fashion products, designing and using visual communication, retailing, business administration, advertising and information technology will all prepare you for a successful career in this challenging but exciting field.
