New Mexico Career Colleges and Trade Schools

Career Colleges and Technical Schools in New Mexico

New Mexico colleges and universities: An enchanting mix of academia and application

Don't be fooled by the fact that the 47th U.S. state only has 17 residents per square mile. It also boasts the highest concentration of PhDs in the country. Federal research facilities like Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, both major science and technology institutions of the U.S. Department of Energy, contribute to New Mexico's drawing power for people who have completed, or want to complete, higher levels of education.

New Mexico colleges and universities

Overseen by the New Mexico Higher Education Department, some of the top schools in the Land of Enchantment can be found in its most important cities: Albuquerque, Los Cruces and Santa Fe.

A multicultural hub of arts, music and history, the capital Santa Fe has three private colleges, a community college and an art school. The Santa Fe University of Art and Design is a popular choice for students who want to pursue an education in creative subjects like photography, graphic design or performing arts. Another prestigious choice is Saint John's College, which follows an alternative curriculum and awards only one degree in Liberal Arts.

The state's largest city, Albuquerque is home to the University of New Mexico, which is ranked among the country's top graduate schools. Albuquerque is also home to several technical schools and trade schools. Schools here are a hub for students who want to study medicine, education, engineering and law.

At Carrington College, you can pursue a certificate or associate degree in one of several health care related subjects, including dentistry, fitness and massage, or veterinary fields.

Do you enjoy working with your hands? An education automotive or electronics fields from ATI Career Training Center may be the right choice for you.

New Mexico State University is based in Las Cruces, the second largest city in New Mexico. The school is home to New Mexico's NASA Space Grant program, making it an ideal choice for students who are interested in aeronautics, math, or engineering.

In August 2011, New Mexico Business Weekly reported that Forbes had included four New Mexico colleges on its list of top undergraduate institutions: The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Saint John's College, New Mexico State University and the University of New Mexico.

History, culture and counter-culture

Rich with history, the state boasts several museums and institutions dedicated to preservation of and education about Native American culture. These include the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, the Institute of American Indian Arts and the tribally owned Poeh Cultural Center and Museum. New Mexico is also home to millions of acres of protected national forests and preserved tribal artifacts and ruins, including the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument and the Aztec Ruins National Monument.

New Mexico has actual scientific and pop-science relevance. In 1945, scientists tested the first atomic bomb outside the city of Alamagordo. Two years later, a farmer in Roswell discovered "extra-terrestrial" debris on his property and a conspiracy theory was born. To date, "believers" flock to Roswell in the hopes of finding answers to their burning questions about whether alien life has visited planet Earth.
