We live in a world full of laws and legal procedures. This means that lawyers are very busy people and they need competent and trained personnel to assist them. If you have an interest in legal work this is excellent news for you, as opportunities for people who seek paralegal/legal assistant work are very good.
The duties of a paralegal are varied and interesting. You would probably spend time involved in the wide range of preparation and follow-up required by court cases and hearings. Litigation is a fascinating field and you could find yourself researching the legal aspects of a case, as well as preparing documents and drafting pleadings. Outside the courtroom there is plenty of work to do on mortgage agreements, trust deeds, and contracts. You might also find yourself involved in tax work.
This is a field of work where a college education can really help you to progress. You can take programs leading to an associate or bachelor degree in paralegal studies. If you already have a degree, then you can add a paralegal certification to that. Courses will vary, but you can expect to study subjects such as family law, civil law, and legal research, along with criminal and business law. You may also undertake an internship to develop your practical skills.
As a qualified paralegal/legal assistant you would probably work in a private law firm. You might also find openings in insurance companies, banks, or corporate law departments, among other locations.
