Michigan colleges: Small private schools, top universities, solid sports teams

Fans of the University of Michigan Wolverines regularly fill the 109,901-seat Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. The Michigan State Spartans men's basketball team won the NCAA national championship in 1979 and 2000, making it a source of pride. Students can also catch professional sports games played by the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions and Detroit Pistons. If you like sports, you may want to study here.

Michigan colleges and universities

In addition to housing many career colleges, trade and technical schools, the state is home to the well-respected University of Michigan school and Michigan State University. A little more about these two venerable higher education institutes.

University of Michigan: There are three campus locations: Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn. The flagship campus in Ann Arbor was founded in 1817. It is spread across 3,153 acres with 571 major buildings.
- Tuition: In-state tuition cost for the 2010-2011 school year was $12,263 for two terms, while non-resident students paid $36,675.
- Enrollment and faculty: For the Fall 2010 semester, the three schools hosted 58,947 students. The system employed 8,971 teaching staff, including graduate instructors.
- Housing: About 11,350 students or 27 percent of the student body lived in 17 residence halls.
- Degrees granted, 2009-2010: 8,675 undergraduate, 5,280 graduate.
Michigan State University: Located in East Lansing, MSU is a 5,200-acre campus housing 561 buildings.
- Tuition: For the 2011-2012 academic year, freshman and sophomore in-state undergrads paid $406 per credit, while juniors and seniors paid $444 per credit. Graduate students with Michigan residency paid $569 per credit. Fees for non-resident freshmen and sophomores were $1,038, while juniors and seniors paid about $1,071. Out-of-state graduate students paid $1,117.
- Enrollment and faculty:In the fall of 2010, there were 47,131 students enrolled at MSU, and the school employed roughly 4,900 faculty and academic staff.
- Housing: Undergraduate housing for a double room and meals was $3,885.

Michigan private colleges, career colleges and trade schools

The Wolverine State is home to dozens of well-established, private educational institutes and trade schools. The University of Phoenix has campus locations in Detroit and Grand Rapids, while ITT has technical schools in the cities of Flint, Grand Rapids and Troy.

Bordering four of the five Great Lakes, Michigan is home to more than 11,000 inland lakes and 36,000 miles of streams. The city of Dearborn lays claim to the Henry Ford Auto Museum in Dearborn, as well as many Civil War historical sites. Other cultural attractions include horse racing tracks, museums, wineries, water parks and casinos.
