Maryland colleges and universities: Discover your path in 'America in Miniature'

Maryland is often called "America in Miniature" because its landscape from east to west closely mimics that of the country. From the Eastern shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the mountainous area on the West Virginia border, you can find every terrain in between. This can make it a great place to attend a university, career college or technical school, if you're unsure in which of the 50 states you'd like to live.

There are more than 140 colleges and universities in the "Free State," including technical schools and career colleges. Many are located in the state's larger cities, such as Baltimore, Bethesda and Rockville, but there are rural opportunities, as well. The small town of Towson is located in the mountainous western portion of the state. Annapolis, the state's nautical capital is also home to the U.S. Naval Academy on the eastern shore. The University System of Maryland, which includes the University of Maryland and about a dozen other campuses, offering more than 100 different academic programs.
Loyola University is a Jesuit University in Baltimore with undergraduate and graduate programs in education, business, pastoral counseling, speech and language pathology, and computer enginering.
The Universities at Shady Grove: In Rockville, Maryland, this area houses nine universities and allows students at the junior and senior undergraduate, as well as the graduate levels, to finish their degrees and seek unique internship and career opportunities.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, Maryland had one of the highest per capita incomes in the country--$49, 025 for 2010--and an unemployment rate below the national average at 7.2 percent for July 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The cost of living here is also considered low, and according to the Maryland Association of Realtors, the median housing price in July 2011 was $243,023.
