Manitoba Career Colleges and Trade Schools

Career Colleges and Technical Schools in Manitoba

Polar bears, anyone? Warming up to career education in Manitoba

Our chilly northern neighbor Canada is similar to the U.S. in many ways. Yet, it is an entirely different country, which makes it a solid choice for those want to study abroad without crossing an ocean. Manitoba is an English-speaking province, so there's no need to parlez Francais.

Overview of Manitoba trade schools, colleges and universities

As in the U.S., schooling in Canada is compulsory between the ages of 6 and 16. Students may apply to any public school within the province, as well as a variety of private educational settings.

According to a report by the Manitoba Department of Education, more than 40 secondary schools and colleges offer vocational training in the province. They include many different programs and possibilities, such as:

  • industrial arts
  • technical-vocational programs
  • apprenticeship options
  • co-operative vocational education.

Popular vocations include such titles as:

  • machinist
  • welder
  • dental assistant
  • chef

Students get the chance to learn highly valuable skills that make them employable upon graduation, while earning their high school diplomas.

At the post-secondary level, students also have a lot to choose from in terms of career education, trade schools and technical schools.

Assiniboine Community College (ACC) is an accredited college with the Government of Manitoba Council on Post-Secondary Education, offers more than 30 programs in the fields of agriculture, environment, business, health and human services, trades and technology. Originally called the Brandon Vocational Training Centre, ACC has been providing vocational and career training for half a century. The main ACC campus is located in the City of Brandon. A satellite campus is located in Dauphin, and training sites are located throughout the state.

Among the colleges and universities in Manitoba regulated by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Literacy, four of the state's five universities are in Winnipeg, including:

  • University of Manitoba, the largest and most comprehensive institution
  • Collège Universitaire de Saint-Boniface, the province's only French-language university
  • Brandon University formed in 1899, the province's newest university

Whether you're looking for work soon after high school graduation, or you're interested in earning a master's or doctorate degree, there are opportunities to be found from Winnipeg to the Hudson Bay.

Enjoying the Great White North while attending school

Life should not be all work and no play. Fortunately, great recreational opportunities can be found Canada.

Manitoba is said to have more than 100,000 lakes. This makes it an ideal place for boating, swimming, kayaking and fishing enthusiasts. The name "Manitoba" is believed to mean "lake of the prairies" in an aboriginal language.

The largest ethnic group is English-Canadian, and there is a significant Franco-Manitoban minority. Winnipeg is both the largest city and the provincial capital. More than 60 percent of Manitoba's population lives here.

For the adventure of a lifetime, try snorkelling or kayaking alongside the beluga whales in the Churchill and Seal rivers. Come October, the Churchill becomes the Polar Bear Capital of the World, making it North America's most accessible place to see polar bears in the wild.

Pristine nature also awaits in the province's more than 50 provincial parks. If museums are your thing, don't miss the Mennonite History Village and the Canadian Fossil Discovery Center.
