Nursing, Medical Services, and Medical and Dental Assistant Training in Manitoba

Colleges, schools and careers in Manitoba

More than one million people live in Manitoba, the fifth-largest provincial population in Canada. Its wide open spaces, free health care and education systems, and highly diversified economy make it desirable for many prospective college students. This diversification also strengthens its economy: the unemployment rate in Manitoba in 2010 was 5.4 percent, considerably lower than the U.S. unemployment rate of 2010, which was 9.6 percent.

The province is known for its diversity: It's home to Russian Mennonites, Icelanders, Ukranians, Germans, Asians, Africans, South Americans and people of Caribbean descent. Additionally, there are more than 115,000 people of Aboriginal descent. More than 200 languages are spoken in Manitoba.

You'll find four-year colleges and universities, both public and private, as well as community colleges and vocational or technical colleges. Tuitions generally range between $6,500 and $10,000 Canadian. Tuition fees in Manitoba tend to average lower, than in other Canadian provinces.

The diversified economy of Manitoba gives it strength, which many students find appealing. One of Manitoba's largest employment sectors, manufacturing makees up 12 percent of provincial employment. Manitoba is home to the country's largest furniture, door, window and cabinetry production facilities. It is also the continent's largest producer of busses.

Business services make up another large percentage of employment, thanks to two of Canada's major financial corporations being located here: Great-West Lifeco and IGM Financial. CanWest Global Communications Corporation, one of the country's largest media companies, is also located in Manitoba. Accommodation and food services, as well as health care, round out the top employment sectors. The average hourly wage in March 2011 was $20.25.

Professional healthcare opportunities are on the rise, which means there's an ever-growing demand for staff to work in the medical environments they create. However, it's not so simple to just step into the role of a medical receptionist, for instance. Training as much as you can by taking business administration---specifically medical---courses is an excellent way to ensure your professional success.

Just as with a traditional administrative assistant education, your training starts with a core understanding of computers and their many applications in an office setting. Medical environments, though, have additional needs that the proper courses will teach you.

Specialized classes teaching you the language of the health profession are a must. One of the many responsibilities in a medical office is transcription, so being familiar with the terminology prior to going into one will not only make your job easier, it'll make you appear more competent, as you'll have to ask fewer questions to complete your assignments. In addition, education in legal issues regarding right to privacy, general human biology, and how billing systems work add to both your marketability and versatility as a potential employee.

With people's wellbeing at stake, taking your career seriously as a medical professional is an absolute essential. Training in business administration medical courses will not only make you a better employee, it could also very well save lives.
