Kansas Career Colleges and Trade Schools

Career Colleges and Technical Schools in Kansas

Kansas career colleges and trade schools

Kansas historically has played a key role in the opening of the West. Long an agricultural and livestock state, today The Sunflower State ranks eighth in the continental United States for natural gas and oil production. In the last few decades, the economy has expanded to include high tech and aerospace industries. Residents and employers place a high premium on post-secondary education, a fact borne out by the nearly 200 colleges, universities, vocational and trade schools across the state.

When they're not hitting the books, students enjoy visiting historical trails, forts and cattle towns, the arts, culture and nightlife in Lawrence and Kansas City. Golf, biking, hiking, camping, canoeing and water skiing are also popular activities. Barbecues, music festivals, fairs and rodeos draw residents and visitors from around the United States.

Choosing Kansas colleges, universities, trade schools and career colleges

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 29 percent of the state's 2.8 million residents over the age of 25 hold at least a bachelor's degree. This number exceeds the national average of four-year college graduates. The Kansas Board of Regents lists 10 public universities, 25 public community and technical colleges, and more than 150 private and out-of-state institutions offering campus and online degree programs across the state. Students can select from two- or four-year undergraduate programs, graduate degrees, professional certifications and licensure, trade and vocational diplomas.

In a July 2011 survey by the Ranking Web of World Universities, the University of Kansas was ranked No. 85 among the nation's Top 100 colleges and No. 124 worldwide among 20,000 higher education institutions. Students seeking career-focused trade education will find private schools dedicated to training in fields as diverse as nursing, real estate, massage therapy, NASCAR driving and automotive.

Located in Lawrence, the largest state university has nearly 29,000 students, while one two-year technical college in Emporia has only 480 students. A wide selection of online colleges offer self-paced, flexible degree programs for students who choose to complete their training on the Internet.

Living and working in "America's Bread Basket"

According to The Council for Community and Economic Research, Kansas enjoyed the eighth-lowest cost-of-living rate for the United States during the second quarter of 2011. Housing costs were 14 percent lower than the national average.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a mean annual income of $39,290 for that state's 1.3 million workers in 2010. According to the U. S. Department of Labor, top employers include these five:

  1. Spirit Aero Systems Inc. in Wichita
  2. Sprint-Nextel Corp. in Overland Park
  3. Cessna Aircraft Co. in Wichita
  4. University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City
  5. Quest Dynastic Laboratory in Lenexa

A 2011 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers revealed that the hottest college degrees for this year are in these subjects:

  • computer science
  • accounting
  • finance
  • engineering
  • business administration
  • information sciences
  • economics

Kansas universities, colleges, trade and technical schools offer great career education options for students, who want to prepare for these and other satisfying, high-demand majors and careers.
