By combining images and sound, commercial and advertising artists and designers attempt to convey ideas to businesses and consumers using graphic images that will trigger the emotion of consumers and invoke consumer spending. For this reason, commercial and advertising art and design not only require artistic talent and creativity to promote businesses and products, but also an understanding of social psychology and human motivation. Commercial and advertising artists and designers work with several different types of medium such as print, electronic, film and computer software.
Many colleges and universities offer programs that lead to both bachelor's and master's degrees in art and design. These programs typically offer a general approach to studio art and design work such as computer animation, engraving, drawing and cartooning as well as courses on how to use computers to design and lay out text and graphics. Community colleges and independent schools of art and design also offer studio training and programs in commercial and advertising art. These independent art schools tend to focus more intensively on studio work and career preparation than larger universities may, and they also will often grant bachelor's and master's degrees. Bachelor's degree programs typically take four years to complete, and master's degrees typically take one or two more years in addition to the bachelor's degree program.
Finding employment in Advertising Art and Design is extremely competitive; however, graphic artists with excellent talent, creativity and a strong portfolio, which should include various types of creative work, as well as outstanding computer skills, will find employment.
