Culinary and Hospitality Degrees and Careers in Indiana

Attending college in Indiana can be a great choice. This primarily rural state is also home to the city of Indianopolis and its legendary car race, the Indianopolis 500. You can also enjoy fine dining, and a small but interesting arts scene in Indianopolis. Living in rural or suburban Indiana means friendly neighbors, affordable housing, and a relatively low crime rate and high standard of living. There are many choices of where to go to college, and Indiana is worth a second look.

Culinary and Hospitality Degrees and Careers

Culinary training programs provide students with skills and knowledge needed for careers as chefs, cooks, food prep, and catering managers. Culinary arts degrees offer training in some of the following areas:
  • Culinary history and regional cuisine
  • Food preparation and cooking techniques
  • Kitchen management and staff supervision
Culinary arts programs also teach food and beverage presentation, serving and etiquette. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) forecasts good employment opportunities for chefs, head cooks, food prep and serving supervisors with keen competition for higher paying positions. The median annual salary for chefs and head cooks was $40,630 as of May 2010.

Combining culinary arts and hospitality programs for added career potential

Selecting a culinary and hospitality degree program can broaden your career prospects as hotels, lodges, resorts and bed and breakfast inns cater to visitors as well as dining guests. Opportunities for self-employment in culinary arts hospitality include:
  • Owning a bed and breakfast inn, motel, or lodge
  • Catering and/or events planning
  • Travel and tourism consultant
The BLS reports that most management trainee programs for large hotel chains require a minimum of a bachelor's degree in hospitality management or business. Lodging managers earned a median annual salary of $46,880 as of May, 2010. Earning a degree in culinary arts and hospitality management prepares you for owning your own business or consulting within hospitality and tourism fields.
