Idaho Career Colleges and Trade Schools

Career Colleges and Technical Schools in Idaho

Eye of the potato: Career education at Idaho colleges and universities

While potatoes here are the stuff of legend and taken quite seriously in this mountainous state filled with pristine beauty and recreational opportunities, there's more to the state than potatoes and outdoor adventure. Higher education holds weight in the Gem State.

Idaho universities, career colleges and trade schools

Idaho has an academic tradition that embraces a number of colleges, universities, trade schools and technical schools. The five state universities include Eastern Technical College, which specializes in health and business education. The main campus of the University of Idaho is located in the charming student town of Moscow.

The College of Western Idaho offers a heavy equipment operator training course, as well as a number of other technical and vocational degrees, including:

  1. Automotive technology
  2. Dental assisting
  3. Marketing management
  4. Network administration
  5. Welding and metals fabrication
  6. Wildland fire management

Many CWI programs award one of the following:

  1. Technical Certificate, which takes roughly one year to complete
  2. Advanced Technical Certificate, requiring 16 months of study
  3. Post-secondary Technical Certificate, requires less than one year of education beyond high school
  4. Associate of Applied Science, which takes an average of two years

The state's career education offers a myriad of options, depending on your desired length of study.

Boise State University is located in the state capital and largest city. Other colleges and their home towns include the following:

  • Idaho State University in Pocatello
  • Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa
  • Twin Falls College in Southern Idaho

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Idaho offers some "earthy" undergraduate degrees, including environmental horticulture, insects and society, plant biotechnology and sustainable cropping systems, among others.

Located on a crystal-clear lake, North Idaho College offers workforce training and community education programs. Here, students can obtain certificates in massage therapy, real estate, community education or enroll in a variety of apprenticeship programs. Located in the ski town of Couer d'Alene, North Idaho College draws a large number of tourists hitting the slopes in winter. There's a nice outdoor theater in summer, as well.

Living life outside of school

This large and sparsely populated northwestern state is a paradise for outdoorsy students who want to explore pristine forests, kayak down wild rivers, fish or visit top-notch natural attractions. Don't miss Bruneau Dunes State Park, where you will find sand dunes--one is almost 500 feet tall--surrounded by lakes. The Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness is the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 and a great place to get back to nature--with our without your books in tow.

Ski bunnies will fall in love with the legendary ski runs at Sun Valley. For artsy students, try the Basque Museum and Cultural Center in Boise; the state has more residents of Basque descent than any other the nation. For clues about why Idaho is known as both the potato state and the gem state, check out the Gem County Historical Society & Museum, also located in Boise.
