Hawaii Career Colleges and Trade Schools

Career Colleges and Technical Schools in Hawaii

Say 'Aloha' to career education: career colleges and trade schools in Hawaii

It's probably not hyperbole to say that the islands of Hawaii are synonymous with many people's dream vacation. Why not live in paradise and consider getting a higher education in the nation's youngest state?

Colleges and universities in Hawaii: From deep blue sea to big blue sky to hands-on training

The islands' unique position in the middle of the Pacific Ocean--halfway between Asia and the Americas--has created some pretty unique educational opportunities in terms of degrees, majors and programs. If oceanography is your desired field, then you will be in educational nirvana at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Astronomy majors have also come to the right place. Hawaii is a pristine place to study the skies because of the lack of light contamination. At the Astronomy Institute at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, students can earn undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees in astronomy.

Other graduate-level opportunities can be found in law and medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, and the Bill Richardson School of Law, both at the University of Hawaii campus at Manoa in Honolulu.

For those who don't yearn to hit the books for another decade beyond high school, the University of Hawaii System also boasts seven community colleges. Among typical training sequences at these two-year, job-training-focused schools, the University of Hawaii, Honolulu Community College offers a number of apprenticeship and journeyman opportunities, including the following five:

  1. ceramic tile setter
  2. plasterer
  3. operating engineer
  4. air conditioning fitter
  5. telecommunications installer

Upon completion of an approved apprenticeship program, work training and related instruction hours may be applied toward an associate degree.

Private and for-profit universities in the state include theological seminaries, herbal medicine institutes and career training at schools, such as:

  • Hawaii Pacific University
  • University of Phoenix
  • Hawaii Technology Institute
  • Hawaii Theological Seminary
  • World Medicine Institute

For such a small state, the number of ways you can get an education are great. Increasing your earning potential is important, too, as you'll find one of the highest costs of living here.

Show me the numbers: earnings for graduates of trade schools

The Bureau of Labor Statistics listed the following mean, annual wages for positions that require formal vocational education for the state as of May 2010:

  1. Architectural and civil drafters: $45,420
  2. Automotive service technicians and mechanics: $41,610
  3. Biological technicians: $$30,600
  4. Dental laboratory technicians: $38,370
  5. Riggers: $63,440

Paradise found: Having fun should be easy to do here

We don't think we have to twist anyone's arm to attend college on a tropical island. And if you were born here, it's understandable that you don't want to leave. What's not to love about pristine beaches, temperate weather, remote diving spots, breathtaking mountains, lush forests and magical waterfalls?

Those looking for a big-city experience can certainly find one, as well, in the state capital, Honolulu on the island of Oahu, which is also famous for its legendary North Shore surfing. Honolulu is home to some 400,000 residents and one of the main financial centers of the Pacific, so there may be career opportunity for those who study banking or finance.

Are you ready for your education in paradise? Select your favorite program and you could be studying at one of Hawaii's career colleges, universities or trade schools in no time.
