Tourism and the travel industry are both industries that provide a good indicator of the economy's health. When people are not taking trips, or are not spending very much money on leisure activities, they are generally worried about the strength of the economy or their own jobs. When people are more secure about their jobs, get a pay raise, or feel like the economy is moving in a positive direction, they tend to travel more, and try to find more time in their lives for relaxing and learning experiences. These days, the tourism and travel industries are picking up after a relatively slow few years. This means that jobs in these industries are also on the rise. A particular field of jobs within these industries that tend to be more lucrative than others is the field of travel or tourisms services management. Managers within travel services companies, such as airlines, car rental firms, or even travel agencies, tend to have many responsibilities. They are generally in charge of other people, and have to create staffing schedules. Managers often have worked in other travel positions, and thus are familiar with the many systems within the firm. Because of this expertise, they are often called upon to fix problems or do a number of specific jobs in a time crunch.
Depending on the managerial position, other preparation might be necessary, such as a management degree. There are a number of reputable schools that offer management degrees focused on the travel industry.
