Information and communications technology is an increasingly powerful tool for participating in global markets, improving businesses, and enhancing individual opportunities. Communications technicians perform a variety of duties involved in the operation of various communications devices such as television, radio, and the internet. Communications technicians install cable systems, maintain and repair equipment, and provide service to meet the communication needs required to provide a wide range of residential and commercial services in telephone service and computer networks.

Most educational, training, and degree programs in communications technology are certificate or associate degree programs offered by community colleges and private training schools. These programs prepare you to give technological support in fields such as photography, educational media, film, radio and television. Typically there are a variety of courses offered which focus on the mechanical, scientific, and technical aspects of communications, including how to operate, set up, adjust, fix and take care of equipment. Many programs offer courses in digital editing and manipulation; other programs offer you the opportunity to specialize in one or more of the communications technologies. This means that the majority of your courses will teach you about one aspect of communication technology, such as radio broadcasting or knowledge of specific equipment for developing film or other technical processes. Longer programs may prepare you to assist with the production of radio and television shows or films. Most programs in communications technology take from one to two years to complete.

With a degree in communications technology, you can work in a variety of jobs. With experience you can work as a manager of a project or work on postproduction for a television studio. Many communications technicians also work in advertising or public relations.
