  1. Four-year public universities: Arkansas has 11 public four-year universities, the state department of higher education reports. Seven of the schools are in the University of Arkansas school system. Campus locations are at Fort Smith, Little Rock, Monticello, Pine Bluff, Fayetteville, Little Rock and Conway.

  2. Four-year private colleges: Of the 11 small, private colleges, Hendrix College in Conway was ranked No. 71 on Forbes list of best private colleges in 2009. Arkansas Baptist College, Philander Smith College, Central Baptist College and Williams Baptist College are ranked among the Top 50 least expensive private colleges by the aggregator Website Cappex.

  3. Two-year universities: A total of 22, two-year community and technical colleges are located in Arkansas.

  2. About 54 percent of college students in Arkansas started four-year universities for the start of the 2010-2011 school year, the state's Department of Higher Education reports.

  3. More than one-third attended two-year universities, while about another 10 percent were enrolled in private Arkansas colleges and universities.

  4. Estimated cost of tuition, room and board for the 2011-2012 academic year at the University of Arkansas was $7,688 for resident undergraduates and $12,905 for non-resident undergrads.

  5. The Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock focuses on global leadership and civic engagement.

Arkansas career, trade and technical schools

In addition to the traditional institutions of higher learning, there are options for students who wish to quickly enter the workforce by completing a certificate or degree program at career colleges or trade schools. ITT Technical Institute has a campus in Little Rock, and the University of Phoenix has locations in Little Rock and Rogers. The city of West Memphis is home to Roadmaster Drivers School, and Fayettville is home to Blue Cliff College, which offers career training in massage therapy.

With its many spectacular natural attractions, including the only public diamond mine in the world, waterfalls and limestone caves in the Ozark Mountains, the Natural State is a natural place to study for those who like a laid-back lifestyle. The state is home to many Civil War battlefields, national parks and the Clinton Presidential Library named for Bill Clinton, who served as the state's governor before being elected the 42nd President of the United States.
