There are three major universities, as well as dozens of community colleges located in cities and towns across the state. Take a closer look at each:

Arizona State University: ASU is one of the largest public university systems by enrollment in the U.S. There are four campuses: Tempe, West Phoenix, Eastern Mesa and downtown Phoenix.

Tuition costs for the 2011-2012 academic year for in-state students enrolled at the downtown Phoenix campus were $4,604 per semester or $9,208 per academic year. Total cost of attendance, which includes books, room and board, transportation and living expenses totaled just under $24,000 per academic year, the university reports. Non-resident tuition costs are significantly higher: Just over $22,319 per academic year for tuition alone. Standard cost of attendance for non-residents is $36,527 per academic year. Enrollment at ASU totaled 70,440 students for fall semester 2010. The Tempe campus enrolled 58,371 students.
University of Arizona: Founded in 1885 in Tucson, the main campus has 179 buildings. There's a second campus in Sierra Vista. Students at UA can choose from more than 300 undergraduate and graduate degrees.

In the fall of 2009, there were 38,767 students attending University of Arizona. Of these, 30,346 were enrolled in undergraduate programs. Resident tuition for the 2009-2010 academic year was $6,842, while non-residents paid $22,251. Total estimated costs for residents: $15,456; for non-residents: $30,865.
Northern Arizona University: NAU's main campus is located in the quaint town of Flagstaff nestled near the Coconino National Forest, but there are 34 satellite campuses spread across the state. Cost of tuition for students enrolled in the 2011-2012 academic year was $8,008 for residents, and $20,364 for non-residents. Total enrollment for the fall 2010 semester was 25,204. NAU offers 95 undergraduate degree programs and 57 graduate degree paths.
Arizona community colleges : Maricopa Community Colleges are one of the state's largest school systems with 10 community colleges and two career education centers throughout Greater Phoenix. Tuition at one of the campuses averages $2,280 per academic year.

Career education in Arizona

One of the largest distance learning and career colleges in the country got its start in Arizona. The University of Phoenix has campuses in 200 locations and students across the globe. Brookline College has locations in several cities, as do Carrington College and DeVry University.

Arizona students have a wealth of opportunities for higher education--with ample opportunity for recreation mixed in for good measure.
